800-year-old castle cleaned with laser after fire damage
Laser cleaning at Castle Burgdorf
Initial Situation
On 15 February 2024, a fire severely damaged one of Switzerland’s most historic castles. After the fire broke out in the restaurant area, the entire restaurant, the kitchen, hotel rooms across three floors, the Assizes Hall, and several other rooms required restoration.
Challenge
Traditional chemical cleaning methods or conventional blasting techniques were not an option. The risk of damaging the nearly thousand-year-old building fabric was simply too high.
Outcome
The only company with a viable solution was Novosan Laser Clean AG. Using our laser cleaning technology, we were able to remove the soot layer by layer without mechanically affecting the delicate surfaces. In just a few days, this magnificent 800-year-old heritage site was restored to its former glory, allowing the castle restaurant to reopen on schedule.

Testimonials
Both the laser cleaning and the way I worked with the team from Novosan Laser Clean AG at Burgdorf Castle fascinated me from the very beginning. Thanks to the technology and the team, it was possible to restore the historically significant surfaces with maximum care.
When I saw the Novosan Laser Clean AG laser for the first time, I felt I had arrived in the future. Now we are working together to maximise the possibilities of the technology in new applications. I am certain that lasers are the future of conservation and restoration.
